Made of Rattan
Due to its durability and resistance to splintering, sections of
rattan in the past time could be used as a strong basket for bringing the
firing woods for daily needs at home.
"Nowadays rattan can be made for a fashionably bag".
This weaving rattan bag is made by Dayak crafter
(Dayak tribe in East Kalimantan-Indonesia).
And the beads pattern which
put on the weaving rattan are picture of the leaves in the forest, namely fern
plants. So, this bag is telling about
the freshnes of the nature life.
Rattan Bag is different from Ata Bag.
What is
Rattan…
Rattan is the name of roughly 600 species of old world
climbing palms, belonging to subfamily Calamoideae.
The climbing habit is associated with the
characterictics of its woody stem, soft, and flexible comparing to true wood
derived from a typical secondary growth.
They are not
trees, but are vine-like lianas, scrambling through and over other vegetation.
Rattan stems are solid, and most species needs stuctural support and
cannot stand on their own.
Rattans have been known to grow up to hundreds of metres long. Most
(70%) of the world’s rattan population exist in Indonesia, distributed among
the islands Borneo (Kalimantan), Sulawesi, and Sumbawa. The rest of the world’s
supply comes from the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, and Bangladesh.
